Course Description
Israel, a small Mediterranean nation with a population exceeding nine million, is one of the most intensely debated countries in the world. However, these debates are often characterized by misunderstandings of Israel’s complex history, diverse society, and multifaceted political system. This course is designed to help students gain a nuanced understanding of Israeli politics and society, introducing them to both dominant and marginalized perspectives within the country.
It is important to note that this is not a course about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead, the focus is on the internal dynamics of Israeli society and politics. Special attention will be given to the impact of the events of October 7 and the ongoing political crisis on Israeli society.
The course is structured into four parts: The first part explores the ideological foundations of the State of Israel. The second part delves into the social divisions and identities within Israeli society and their influence on the political system and culture. The third part examines Israel’s political system, focusing on key players such as state institutions and political parties. The final section addresses recent political developments in Israel.
This course is rooted in open debate and the exchange of diverse ideas, fostering an environment where students are encouraged to voice their opinions and critically engage with differing viewpoints. However, the emphasis is on cultivating discussions that are grounded in facts. Mutual respect is paramount, as it ensures that even in the face of disagreement, conversations remain constructive and inclusive.
